About Me

I have been coaching Basketball and golf for the past 5 years and have loved every moment of it. It is why I have decided to head back to school to become a physical education teacher. I really love being able to shape the next generation through sports and education.

MN Golf State Tournament Practice Round

Great day today. We had outstanding weather today. It makes me actually want to in Minnesota and not move somewhere warm. I would love to live somewhere that has warm weather year round. Back to the nature of this post. The MSHSGCA did an outstanding job of hosting the Class "A" Golf Banquet. It was short and sweet and did a great job of praising the efforts of all the great student athletes that made it to the State Tournament. Congrats to Andrew Peterson who is back at the State Tournament and primed and ready to go for that Individual State Championship. Good Luck!

Tin Cup

I love this movie. I can't get enough of it. Kevin Costner Might be one of the greatest Actors in Sports roles. I love him in Tin Cup, Field of Dreams, For the Love of the Game, And don't forget Bull Durham.
Tin Cup Just grabs you and makes you want to play golf and then it torches you in the end with his melt down.
But the best part of the movie is when he quotes his poem about the golf swing...Grip it and Rip it!!!

Podcasting

Podcasting can be a great way to reach your students outside of your classroom.

For example, my assistant coach and I created a podcast that can go out to friends and family that allows them to stay updated on the world of golf at Meadow Creek High School. They are able to see how their friends and family members have done and here recaps of the meets that we took part in.

Google Docs

Google Docs are a great resource to have and use within the classroom. Just think about it. If your computer crashes you will still have all of your documents saved. It is free. It is easy to use. It is very user friendly. And most of all, if you are used to using Microsoft office it is very similar to that.

It would be an easy way to have your students work together and not have to worry about who has what software. One of the biggest problems I have when I send out emails with attachments is people writing back saying that they do not have that software to be able to open it up.

Google Docs help in many different ways and can be great to get all your kids using.

Webquest

What a great way to communicate with other educators in our field to see if they have advise or just want to use the information you have for another activity.

You can check out my site that was designed to help brake down the teaching of how to shoot a basketball. Feel free to check out my site and see a good way to shoot a basketball and teach others how to shoot a basketball here is my site on B-E-E-F shooting technique:

Google App's

There are so many ways that we as educators can use these applications in order to create an environment that will lead to our students doing better and our classrooms being much more organized.

Google Calendar for instance is great for keeping a schedule up and ready for you to stay organized.

Personally, I use iGoggle already and love the fact that it can keep us up to date on what is happening with the news and emails all right there in front of yourself. In the classroom you could put up podcast for the students to use as resources for homework and have them all signed into iGoogle on there own and that stuff will pop right up for them.

Picasa can be used greatly in the PE department. you could have pictures showing proper form so that when the students are practicing they can do so right at home and see what it should look like.

And Knol is a way that the students can get their own thoughts out there. It is great for students to realize that they can teach others. As a basketball coach I always end up teaching my athletes the way to teach others because as soon as they can teach others the better they will be at that skill and the more knowledge they will have.

D2L

Sites, such as, D2L can be so useful for everyone who takes the time to get a little bit more comfortable with them . D2L makes it easier in the long run on both the teacher and the student.
Let's think about it like this. Student don't have to print things off and teachers can keep all of their files on the computer. To me this would be ideal as an educator.

D2L is great at allowing us students to understand where we are grading wise and where we are in the class. These sites can only benefit all who use them.

Wiki's

I love all of these Wiki's that are out there. What a great tool in this day of technology. These are things that all students will get benefits from.

Think about how this will give the students opportunities to work together on projects while from the comfort of their own home. If anything their parents will love that they will not have to tool them around to get a group assignment done.

As far as places like wikipedia are also great for researching. It allows students a chance to learn by reading and then reading to prove what the read right.

All around great way of using technology to learn.

RSS

This can be very useful. The RSS Feeds allow us the capability to be aware of what is going on in real time. It makes it much easier to stay in touch with others and also to see what they want to know about you. This can be very useful in keeping up with students.

The more that we can comunicate with our students the better off we will be. We, as Physical Educators, need to be energizing the next generation. We need to be showing them how much fun physical activity can be. As the saying goes, "Out of sight, out of Mind." What better way to keep our students active outside of the classroom than keeping them involved in learning more about different types of activities that can excite them.

My creation

It would be cool to use this with my PE students to help them when there is not enough room in the gym because pictures are taking place. We could have them go in and develop cards based on what a certain sport would look like to them if it where a trading card. This can increase the level of excitement about certain activities and get them thinking about how they can enjoy those activities.

With all that said it is imperative that we teach our students how to be active and in order to take the time to do these types of assignments it would be best to be done as homework. The more that we are activating our students minds towards the goal of physical fitness the better job that we are doing as educators.

Montego bay View at YWAM Base

What a great view.

The way to use this in the physical education classroom is to be able to show photos on how to do something. so many time you are trying to explain something but visuals are so much better. Flickr and sites like this allow you to carry many photos without taking up any of your space or having to carry something around with you all the time.

Flicker and Picture Sites

This is the view that I was able to look at for 6 months while I lived in Jamaica.

We can use sites like Flicker to show our students the proper form for shooting a basketball or we can just brighten there day by showing them something to smile about like my picture from Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Social Networks within the Classroom

Using too much Social networks can be good or bad. We need to be looking to the future of how the world will work and these networking sites are the future. With that said, we cannot be completely one sided. There are some great uses of these network sites including allowing students to learn from one another on these sites after school. Many times when students need help they could struggle to understand by talking on the phone. Now, they have the capability to correspond with each other online and see what they are talking about.

Advantage are plenty, but we need to be aware of the social things that the students are missing out on by not actually physically socializing with each other. But beyond this I believe that we are living in the days of technology and we must not fight what is coming but embrace it. Social networking sites can be utilized greatly if we only try.

IM 422 Opening Assignment

As a Physical Educator it would be great to be able to have a blog where your students can come and see what is going on in the world of Physical Education.

As obesity runs ramped we need to create new way in which we can peak the interest of our students and get them out there and being active. As I recently read on the MNAHPERD newsletter just stated; "Almost half of young people aged 12-21 and more than a third of high school students do not participate in vigorous physical activity on a regular basis."

Being that students love spending time on their computers why not use computers to peak their interest.

Enjoy my site and I look forward to hearing your comments about my site.
